There are different types of breast lumps. Breast lumps which are hard to detect and remove are known as impalpable breast lesions. Due to their size and location, these lumps in the breast cannot be seen and felt through the flesh.
Such breast lesions may signal that the patient has breast cancer. Until a few years ago, no more than 5% of cases of non-invasive breast cancer were diagnosed.
Up to forty percent of women with breast abnormalities have such lumps. The good news is that these impalpable breast lesions can now be detected and removed with minimal scarring.
What to do now to reverse impalpable breast lesions? You may discuss with your doctor about the use of this new technique. This technique involves the use of radioactive material for more precise and faster removal of the breast lumps, with minimal scarring.
The procedure is called Radioisotope or Radioguided Occult Lesion Localisation (ROLL). The Radioisotope Occult Lesion Localisation is recommended only for patients with impalpable breast lesions which are also hard to remove with the current hookwire localisation method.
The hookwire localisation method involves the insertion of a fine wire into the breast as a marker for the doctor to know where the breast lumps are. This procedure may be uncomfortable and only has a maximum of forty percent chance of accuracy, making it unsuitable for the removal of impalpable breast lesions. What’s more, there may also be the unnecessary removal of excess healthy tissue.
With the Radioisotope Occult Lesion Localisation technique, patients first undergo an X-ray or ultrasound scan to locate the abnormalities, which are either tiny lumps or calcium deposits which show up as clusters of white spots and black-greyish masses respectively.
When found, a nuclear medicine doctor will inject a low dose of radioactive material directly into the lesion. As the radioactive material is made up of large and dense molecules, it remains within the lesion and does not spread to the rest of the breast tissue.
A surgeon then makes a 1.5 to 2.0 centimetre incision at an area that would have the least visible scarring. A hand-held gamma-ray probe, which beeps when it detects radioactive areas, helps him locate and extract the abnormal tissue accurately. Once removed, the probe scans the breast to ensure it is free of radioactive material.
With the new technique, breast lumps can now be cleanly removed in just half the time needed compared to the conventional method. The entire ROLL procedure takes less than half an hour. It also eliminates the unnecessary removal of excess healthy tissue while ensuring that the breast tumour is entirely removed.
The precise localisation of the abnormal tissue allows the surgeon to better plan the skin incision for a better cosmetic outcome and minimal scarring. Cosmetically favourable positions to make incisions would be either under the armpit or below the breast.
The hookwire method costs about US$500 to US$600. With ROLL to remove breast cancer lumps, the procedure is likely to cost just thirty to forty percent more and may even require less downtime.
Most pregnant women will tend to have these two burning questions, “How can I tell the sex of my baby?”, as well as “When can I find out the sex of my baby?” If expectant parents are able to tell the sex of their unborn baby, they will be able to choose themes and colors based on the baby’s gender, the suitable printing patterns for the baby’s gender, and other cute characters found in a baby’s nursery.
There will also be a group of parents who may be concerned about gender-linked diseases. Determining the sex of their unborn baby early will help them work with their doctor to decide on the most appropriate treatment.
How to determine the sex of the baby before it is born? There are three baby’s sex tests to determine the sex of your unborn baby. How early can you know the sex of the baby? This will depend on which method to use. Read on to find out more.
1) Ultrasound
Not long ago, the baby’s gender could not be determined before birth and even less so predetermined. Then came along ultrasound. Using ultrasound, your baby’s gender can be predicted with a relatively high degree of accuracy. Determining a baby’s sex by ultrasound is fairly straightforward and safe.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce a black and white image of the fetus. How soon can you tell the sex of a baby with ultrasound? When an ultrasound is used at the 20th week of pregnancy to predict your baby’s gender, it will be around 90% accurate.
To be able to tell the sex of your baby, the ultrasound technician needs to get a clear picture of your unborn baby’s “parts” to be certain. For girls, the technician will be looking for three small lines between her legs indicating the female labia. If the baby is a boy, the technician should be able to see the penis and scrotum between the legs.
2) Amniocentesis
Another procedure performed pregnant women to tell the baby’s gender is amniocentesis where chorionic villus sampling is done. However, identifying your baby’s gender is not the primary purpose of this test. Chronic villus sampling (CVS) is a technique in which the doctor takes a sample of the baby’s cells to determine whether genetic abnormalities are present.
Amniocentesis at 15 to 20 weeks into pregnancy is generally recommended for women who become pregnant at a later age or the unborn baby might be at risk for genetic diseases or birth and chromosomal defects. Amniocentesis, however, is invasive and carries some risk of miscarriage.
3) Blood Test
Now, a simple blood test can now determine a baby’s sex as early as seven weeks into pregnancy. It is non-invasive and is also highly accurate if used correctly. Studies have found that carefully conducted tests could determine the sex with accuracy ranging from 95 percent at seven weeks to 99 percent at 20 weeks.
Experts say this is likely to lead to more widespread use by parents concerned about gender-linked diseases and those who are merely curious. People considering the more ethically controversial step of selecting the sex of their children may also be interested in taking this blood test.
The benefit of this test, which analyses foetal DNA found in the mother’s blood, is that it can establish the sex weeks earlier than both the ultrasound and amniocentesis. Doctors in Europe now routinely use the test to help expectant parents whose offspring are at risk of rare gender-linked disorders determine whether they need invasive and costly genetic testing. However, doctors in the United States generally do not prescribe this test as it is still unregulated and medical laboratories are not yet federally certifed to use it.
The causes of menstrual migraines, or mensturally related migraine, are linked to changes in the levels of estrogen during a woman’s menstrual cycle. For a migraine attack to be classified as a menstrual migraine, according to the International Headache Society, there must be a migraine attack (without aura) 66% of the time or more two days before to three days after the start of the bleeding.
Estrogen levels drop just prior to the start of the menstrual flow. Most often researchers suggest that it is the change in estrogen is what causes the menstrual migraine attack. This belief probably stems from a study by investigators in 1966 who noted that migraines could become more severe in women taking birth control pills, especially those containing high doses of estrogen.
Researchers have also found that the frequency of side effects, such as headache, decreased in those who took birth control pills containing lower doses of estrogen and did not occur in those who took birth control pills containing progesterone.
Estrogen and other hormones increase and then begin to cycle at puberty, resulting in a surge in headache activity for many girls. The cycling of hormones and othe body chemicals with monthly menstrual periods often causes a marked increase in headache frequency and severity with menstrual flow and, to a lesser extent, mid-cycle with ovulation.
Premenstrual migraines regularly occur during or after the time when the female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, decrease to their lowest levels. The change in hormone level is also accompanied by a dip in magnesium levels. It is well known that low magnesium levels may make a person more vulnerable to a migraine attack.
Hormonal fluctuations may cause a woman’s magnesium and other nutrient levels to dop just prior to menstruation, as well as nutrient loss as a result of the bleeding. As mentioned earlier, prior to menstruation, estrogen levels drop in women.
According to magnesium researcher Dr. Mildred Seelig, estrogen causes an enhancement of magnesium utilization and uptake by soft tissues and bone. It is therefore logical to conclude that a drop in estrogen levels may decrease magnesium uptake. A 1981 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that cell magnesium level were significantly lower patients with premenstrual symptoms than in controls.
Changes in estrogen levels also causes a change in levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. Low levels of serotonin have been linked to menstrual migraine causes for some time. Serotonin influences blood vessel constriction, mood, and can impact the way we feel pain. With menstruation, there also tends to be an increase in substances called prostaglandins that make pain receptors more sensitive.
Recent studies also point to an inverse correlation between migraine headaches in women and breast cancer. Breast cancer is associated with higher estrogen levels, so this may be another clue that migraines may occur more frequently in women with lower estrogen levels.
Now that we know that the changes in hormonal levels are linked to menstrual migraine causes, we can learn to reduce the severity of menstrual migraine symptoms. This can be done by exercising regularly, eat nutritious food, take magnesium supplements daily, as well as adopt a regular sleeping pattern.
Makeup brushes are indispensable tools you need for a flawless, natural look. A makeup brush set is important for the application and blending of makeup colors. Below are makeup brushes which you should keep in your makeup case.
Eyebrow Brushes
Two types of eyebrow brushes are commonly used. One of them is shaped much like a mascara wand, very useful when trimming or grooming individual eyebrow hairs. It is used to help brush brows into place and to keep them perfectly shaped all day.
Another type of eyebrow brush is the angled eyebrow brush. It is perfetly angled to apply a crème or powder color to eyebrows. The firm bristles also work well for blending brow pencil lines.
Eyeliner Brushes
Eyeliner brushes help you to apply eyeliner with precision. Eyeliner brushes help you line and define your eyes with eyeshadow or to apply powder over your pencil eyeliner to create a more natural, subtle look.
The flat, rectangular short-bristle brush is great for applying powder eyeliner at the base of the lashline or for pushing color right into the roots of the lashes to make lashes look thicker. The thin, pointed liquid liner brush is perfect for applying liquid, crème, or cake eyeliner with precision.
Eyeshadow Brushes
The precision-style eyeshadow brush is ideal for applying your favorite shade of eye color along the lower lashline. You can also use it to apply a very defined line of color into the crease of the eye. The angled eyeshadow brush is useful for applying a midtone color into the crease or for blending eyeshadow shades together.
The large eyeshadow brush is great for applying midtone colors into the rease and for all-over blending of the eye colors if you are wearing more than one eye color. The arched eyeshadow brush helps you apply your most intense shade or eye color along your lashline and into the outer corners of the crease of your eyes.
Blush Brush
The full, soft blush brush is great for applying blush or bronzer. It is tapered toward the end to help you blend as you apply.
Foundation Brush
The foundation brush is large and smooth. It helps you evenly apply crème or liquid foundation onto the skin. It is perfect for touch-ups, and helps you create a smooth, even application over the foundation you are already wearing.
Large Powder Brush
This big, fluffy brush is great for applying loose powder for a smooth, sheer and even application. It is also great for applying blush by creating a soft, subtle effect.
Concealer Brush
The concealer brush is tapered and is used to apply concealer with precision. It allows you to cover spots or flawed areas of the face without over-blending.
The best makeup for a 60-year-old woman moisturizes the skin while providing the necessary color to brighten up the face. The best makeup for mature skin should not settle into fine lines which makes them even more obvious. The best makeup foundation for mature skin would be the mousse foundation. Mousse foundation is actually a crème foundation that has a whipped consistency. It generally comes in a jar, is lighter and sheerer than the powder compact Mousse foundation evens out the skin tone without appearing heavy. They blend well into the skin rather than sit on top of it, giving great coverage that appears very natural. More importantly, mousse foundations do not collect in fine lines like heavier crème formulas.
Tube concealer is ideal for mature skin. It has a creamier texture that is lighter and less likely to collect in fine lines. It is also one of the most versatile forms of concealer, providing terrific coverage. It can also be mixed with moisturizer or foundation to create a much sheerer product. It is perfect for use under the eyes because it is one of the easiest to blend.
Shimmer shadows offer great, sheer coverage so that when you sweep on the color, you can still see the skin underneath. Shimmer shadows have a subtle sheen and give a hint of sparkle. They typically won’t collect in fine lines, which makes them a perfect choice for mature skin. Light shimmer shadows work great for highlighting and bringing out recessed areas of the eyelid. Dark shimmer shadows are great for adding drama without being as harsh as deep-tone matte shades
Satin finishes fall perfectly in between matte and shimmer. It’s shinier than matte, but not nearly as shiny as a shimmer. A satin finish works well on all skin types, including mature skin.
Crème, gel and liquid blush work well for mature skin. Crème blush has a fresh dewy finish that gives the face a luminous, natural glow. It is great on dry skin because it glides easily over the surface. Apply before you powder, but do not use crème blush if you have open pores as it tends to accentuate them.
Gel blushes are made up of color pigments that are wrapped within silicone particles. It will smooth very nicely onto bare skin to create a pretty, sheer, translucent glow. Apply before you powder. Gel blush is long lasting, looks very natural, and is easy to use. You can use your fingers or a sponge to apply it, then smooth it into the skin.
Liquid blush is actually a liquid that stains the skin. It works well on all skin types. It’s applied like the gel blush, but it more difficult to work with because it must be blended quickly due to its staining quality. Liquid blush is waterproof and lasts all day. You can use either a sponge or your fingers to apply and blend it into your skin.
Crème bronzers can be used to give your face a sun-kissed glow. You can find it in the form of a stick or even in compacts. It can be applied with your fingers or a sponge. It is great on dry skin, or when you don’t want to wear foundation but want a little extra glow.
Crème lipticks contain emollients and provide a full coverage of moist color. Crème lipticks are versatile, wear quite well without being dehydrating. You can consider using lip gloss for shine and moisture as well. Packaged in a wand, tube or pot, lip gloss delivers a sheer layer of color which needs frequent reapplication. When used correctly, it can make the lips look fuller and sexier. Be sure to use a lip liner to correct lip shapes as well as prevent lip color from bleeding into fine lines.
